The Golden Rule of Business: Pay Yourself First

July 3, 2025

In this industry, we’re trained to focus on the client first. Close the deal. Get the application in. Keep the pipeline full. And while all of that matters, too many agents forget the most important financial principle of all:

Pay yourself first.

Let’s break down what that really means — and why it could be the difference between a struggling sales career and a true wealth-building machine.

What Pay Yourself First Actually Means

When your commissions hit your account, the temptation is to pay the bills, buy groceries, reinvest in leads, maybe treat yourself, and then save what’s left.

But if you’re doing it backwards – saving last – you’ll never get ahead.

Paying yourself first means this: before you spend a dollar on anything else, you set aside a portion of your income to keep. Not to spend, not to use for business, but to build.

Even if it’s 5%, even if it’s $50 – it adds up. And it builds a habit.

This is how agents move from making money to building wealth.

How to Start - Even if You Feel Broke

It’s not about the amount – it’s about the system. Here’s a simple strategy:

Open a separate account just for your “wealth fund.” Don’t connect a debit card. Don’t make it easy to access.

Automate a transfer every time you get paid. A percentage – not a flat dollar amount. That way it scales as you grow.

Name the account something that motivates you: “Financial Freedom,” “Legacy Fund,” “Dream House.”

Still worried you “can’t afford” to set money aside? Let me ask you this: if you don’t start, how will you ever afford the life you’re working so hard for? It doesn’t matter how small the amount is; you simply need to start to build this crucial habit.

Think Like a Business. Act Like a Legacy Builder

Wealth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you make intentional decisions with your money – not just to survive, but to grow.

As sales agents, we teach people to prioritize their future. But are we doing the same for ourselves?

If you want to build a business that outlives you – one that funds your faith, your family, your future – it starts here. With rule #1. With paying yourself first.

Start today. Automate it. Protect it. Grow it.

Because if you don’t build your future, no one else will.
